Historical Reference

This colour plate reproduces A Harvest of Wheat (むぎの秋) by Komei Suwa, shown at an exhibition of the Shinkō Yamato-e Association (新興大和絵会). The association was founded in 1921 by Matsuoka Eikyū (1881–1938), a professor at the Tokyo Fine Arts School, to revive the classical Yamato-e tradition — the courtly, decorative native painting of medieval Japan — with a fresh modern sensibility, and it remained active until about 1931. Suwa's harvest scene is a characteristic product of that revival: a recognisably Japanese countryside built from flat, ornamental colour and meticulous detail rather than Western shading, the bundled wheat and stepped fields arranged into a quietly rhythmic pattern.

About the Artwork

️ • The view looks down over a farming hamlet in early summer, when the wheat stands ripe — the title むぎの秋, literally "the autumn of wheat," is the old name for that harvest season. Sheaves and stubble rows fan across the foreground; thatched roofs, kitchen plots and a winding path climb toward densely wooded hills under a pale sky. This reproduction keeps the soft mineral-pigment palette and the patina of the original printed sheet — the cream paper and its letterpress caption in Japanese and English.
