Fukuda Suikō painted hawks so relentlessly, and so well, that Kyoto simply called him "Suikō of the hawks" — and A White Hawk is the subject at its most regal: a pale raptor poised on a red-lacquered falcon stand, beak parted and talons closed, above a swell of pink peonies.

Historical Reference

Born in Kyoto in 1895 as Fukuda Minoru, Suikō trained at the city's School of Arts and Crafts and in Nishiyama Suishō's Seikōsha studio, and it was a hawk that made his name — his first Teiten selection, at the seventh exhibition, before the bird became the specialty of his life (late on, under Tokuoka Shinsen, he turned to quieter ponds and waterside flowers). This white hawk was shown at the Prince Shōtoku Veneration Art Exhibition (聖徳太子奉讃美術展覧会), the great memorial exhibition held in honor of the statesman-regent who established Buddhism in early Japan, and reproduced in a Japanese art journal in 1930. The subject carries centuries of meaning: takagari, falconry, was the pastime of court nobles and samurai and a badge of rank, and a white hawk was its rarest, most auspicious prize — here set on a gilded, tasselled perch with its braided leash and paired with the peony, the "king of flowers" and a sign of honor and wealth.

About the Artwork

️ • Suikō builds the bird from countless fine strokes of white over a warm, gradated amber ground: the dark mask across its eyes, the yellow glare turned sharply aside, the folded wing and long tail, the talons gripping a crossbar capped in gold arabesque and hung with knotted silk cords. Peonies and their broad leaves bank up at the lower left, and the artist's 翠光 seal sits at the upper edge. The color reproduction keeps those soft washes and crisp feather detail intact, together with the scratches, stains, and mellowed tone of paper that has lasted close to a hundred years.
