“Garden” (庭) is a Western-style (yōga) oil painting by the Japanese artist Shigehiro Kawamura (川村重弘). It was shown at the 8th Exhibition of the Imperial Academy of Art — the Teiten — held in Tokyo in 1927, where it was “specially selected” (tokusen, the exhibition’s mark of distinction). The reproduction here is a full-page colour plate from December 1927. The thick, saturated brushwork and sun-struck flowers show the post-Impressionist current then running through yōga, as Japanese painters used European oil technique to render Japanese subjects — here an ordinary garden — in a frankly Western key. Beyond the exhibition record the painter is not well documented, so the attribution is preserved exactly as printed on the page.
