A great Gothic cathedral gathers the last light of an autumn evening in Garden of a Temple by M. Marohe, its slender crossing-spire and buttressed apse rising above a town wall as the whole scene settles into gold-and-blue reflections on the river below. Bare, pruned trees and a few burning-orange crowns line the bank, doubled in water so still it reads as a second sky.

Historical Reference

"Garden of a Temple," painted by M. Marohe, was shown at the French Exhibition — the wave of Exhibitions of French Contemporary Art that the dealer Herman d'Oelsnitz and the Société d'art franco-japonaise brought to Japan from 1922 onward, introducing living French painting to Tokyo and Osaka audiences through the 1920s. It reached Japanese readers in the pages of a Japanese art magazine in 1927, where the subject was titled 寺の庭 — "a temple garden" — recasting a European cathedral and its riverside grounds through the familiar frame of a Buddhist temple and its garden. The painter, M. Marohe (マルシユ), is not otherwise securely identified. In mood the work belongs to a turn-of-the-century fascination with cathedrals mirrored in water at dusk — the current that also produced Monet's Rouen studies and Henri Le Sidaner's hushed twilight towns.
