Historical Reference

Maruyama Banka (1867–1942) was one of the architects of Japanese watercolor. Trained first in Nanga literati brushwork before turning to Western painting at seventeen, he co-founded the Nihon Suisaiga-kai — the Japan Watercolor Society — in 1913 and spent his career insisting the medium deserved to stand beside oil. His art grew out of restless travel: Europe in 1911, Korea in 1917, and in 1923 a long passage through China, Southeast Asia, and India. This view of Mount Abu — the cool Aravalli hill station that rises above the plains of Rajasthan, long a refuge from the heat and a Jain pilgrimage site — belongs to that Indian journey. It is a quiet record of cross-cultural looking: a painter raised on literati ink and European plein-air, working half a world from the Shinano mountains where he was born.
