Night in The Deep Mountains by

A pale, snow-lit crest glows above a valley of near-black pines while faint points of light flicker in the clearing below — this is Night in The Deep Mountains, a colour nocturne after the British fantasist Sidney H. Sime. Better known for the grotesque and the otherworldly, here Sime turns the deep wood itself into something watchful and alive.

Historical Reference

Sidney Herbert Sime (1865–1941) was born into poverty in Hulme, Manchester, and spent five punishing years as a "scoop pusher" in the Yorkshire coal mines before training at the Liverpool School of Art. He made his name in the 1890s with macabre, fantastical drawings for Pick-Me-Up, The Idler and the Pall Mall Gazette, and in 1905 began his celebrated partnership with the writer Lord Dunsany — illustrating The Gods of Pegāna and the dream-mythologies that followed, work so strange that Dunsany praised his "stupendous imagination" and H. P. Lovecraft later counted himself an admirer. His early art was almost entirely black-and-white; in later years he worked increasingly in colour, and this deep-toned nocturne belongs to that vein, reproduced here as a vintage art-magazine plate with its English and Japanese captions (深山の夜) still in place.

️ • The composition is nearly swallowed by darkness: a snow-touched ridge and a wash of luminous cloud crown the top of the scene, while everything below sinks into dense, ink-green forest and shadowed slope. In the dimly lit clearing a cluster of small forms catches the eye — pin-pricks of light glinting where the dark wood meets open ground, the half-seen, watchful presence Sime loved to conjure. This reproduction holds the brooding tonal range of the original along with the patina of the surviving sheet: the cream paper, its soft foxing, and the letterpress title set beneath the image.
