Historical Reference

‘On the Beach’ is by Dame Laura Knight (1877–1970), the most celebrated British woman artist of her generation. From 1907 she and her husband Harold Knight settled in Cornwall — first Newlyn, then Lamorna — where, alongside Alfred Munnings and Lamorna Birch, she made her name with luminous, open-air Impressionist scenes of bathers and holidaymakers along the coast; this sunlit study of figures resting on the rocks belongs to that world. Knight was created a Dame in 1929 and, in 1936, became the first woman elected to full membership of the Royal Academy since its founding members Angelica Kauffmann and Mary Moser in 1768; she later served as an official war artist and recorded the Nuremberg trials. This colour plate reproduces the painting in the Japanese pictorial magazine International Graphics (Kokusai Gahō) in July 1923 — a sign of how closely contemporary British art was followed in Taishō-era Japan.
