Historical Reference

‘The Mediterranean’ (地中海) is attributed here to Maurice Denis (1870–1943), the French painter who in 1890 helped found Les Nabis and became the group’s leading theorist — famous for his dictum that a picture is “essentially a flat surface covered with colours assembled in a certain order,” an idea that fed directly into modern abstraction. A devout Catholic later devoted to sacred art (he founded the Ateliers d’Art Sacré in 1919), Denis was avidly collected in Japan during the Taishō era: the painter Umehara Ryūzaburō studied under him at the Académie Ranson, and Kojirō Matsukata’s purchases gave Tokyo’s National Museum of Western Art the largest Denis holding outside France. This plate records the canvas — a sun-washed Mediterranean / North-African town of whitewashed walls, prickly pear and white-robed figures above a blue sea — as it hung in the collection of Count Suzuki (鈴木伯爵) when the magazine International Graphics (Kokusai Gahō) reproduced it in 1925.
