Fukuda Suikō

Fukuda Suikō (福田翠光, 1895–1973) was a Kyoto Nihonga painter, born Fukuda Minoru. He trained at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts and in the Seikōsha studio of Nishiyama Suishō, first winning notice with a hawk painting at the 7th Teiten; a later Teiten entry, Hagukumi, took a special prize. Hawks became his signature subject, earning him the nickname "Suikō of the hawks" (鷹の翠光). Late in life he studied under Tokuoka Shinsen and turned toward quieter subjects such as ponds and waterside flowers. He exhibited at the Teiten, Shin-Bunten, and Nitten.
