Sidney H. Sime

Sidney Herbert Sime (1865–1941) was an English artist celebrated for his fantastic, macabre and visionary work. Born into poverty in Manchester, he worked in the Yorkshire coal mines before training at the Liverpool School of Art and rising to prominence in the 1890s through periodicals such as Pick-Me-Up, The Idler and the Pall Mall Gazette. He is best remembered for illustrating the early fantasy of Lord Dunsany, beginning with The Gods of Pegāna (1905), and his eerie imagination later influenced admirers such as H. P. Lovecraft. He worked increasingly in colour in his later years; much of his surviving output is now held in an archive in his home village of Worplesdon, Surrey.
